The Oak Bay Marina is a seafarer's paradise when it comes to fishing charters or whale watching tours.
Each summer the beckoning
call of the Pacific lures fishers and sightseers aboard the Discovery Princess, 30-foot cabin cruisers, available for
rent or charter at the local Marina. The Discovery
Princess is a 61-foot, 38-passenger cruiser offering fishing and whale watching charters running June 15 to Labour Day. Reservations are recommended for charters aboard the Discovery which departs each day at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for four-hour tours.
For those who just enjoy venturing out to ocean to see the sights the cost is a reasonable. Others who long to make the catch of the day in casting their reels pay for four hours of anticipation and excitement. Note to fishermen, you will need a valid B.C. fishing license to participate. Licenses are for sale at the Marina (which are good for one year with or without a salmon stamp). Do not worry about rods or tackle, the Marina stocks all fishing gear, plus the obligatory fishing license. Some sea-goers prefer a private guided fishing charter aboard 30-foot cabin cruisers equipped with washrooms. These private charters offer complimentary coffee or tea. Tackle, bait and rods are included as well. Many of the experienced fishing guides have sailed the seas for 30 years or more. The cruisers' capacity is six and minimum booking time is four hours. Reservations are required. Call 250-598-3368 to book your fishing trip.
Have you ever fed wild seals, fished for salmon, gone whale watching or chartered a boat? You can do it all and more at the Oak Bay Marina. The Marina, at 1327 Beach Drive, was built in 1962 by Robert Wright. Mariners from as far away as Indonesia and Texas have stopped at the Marina and many like it so much they never leave. Ocean-going sailors can moor their boats provided they give the Marina at least 48-hours notice. Sailors can gas up at the Marina's Chevron, have their vessels mechanically serviced, buy nautical supplies, or haul her from the water to scrape away barnacles. For land lovers and salty sea dogs alike the Marina features the Marina Restaurant -one of Victoria's best- specializing in fresh seafood and sushi. For a light lunch try the Cafe Deli downstairs. For Oak Bay mementoes try the gift shop. For the marine minded and fish fixated, private and marina-based boat rentals and charters are available and the Marina has a tackle shop with all manner of ocean fishing gear. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Marina is the wild seals. You can buy herring to feed the seals, but keep your hands away, they can bite.
